Mahmuda Begum and her husband are the artisan leaders behind Thanapara Swallows, a Fair Trade artisan enterprise in Bangladesh. As members of the Nest Guild community of artisan businesses, Mahmuda and her husband are working hard to grow their business so as to increase employment opportunities in their community.
This summer, Nest traveled to Bangladesh to meet Mahmuda, her husband, and the talented artisan women and men who work with them. We learned more about the stunning handloom weaving, sewing, and embroidery techniques being used to create the beautiful, sustainable garments that Thanapara Swallows is known for. During our visit, Mahmuda and her husband also guided us through their wastewater management treatment solution, providing us with new insights that will help inform our global project to create a scalable model for affordable, accessible wastewater remediation in rural environments.
It is now our great honor to expand upon Thanapara Swallow's promising future and commitment to community impact by bringing Mahmuda to New York City for the Third Annual Nest Artisan Leadership Summit - a week of industry immersion, leadership training, and hands-on learning from top professionals. Our goals are to help Mahmuda better understand the demands of the export marketplace while equipping her with increased the first-hand knowledge she seeks in order to grow her business. As a forum for peer-to-peer learning, the Summit will also present an opportunity for Mahmuda to share her invaluable insights with other artisan leaders from around the world.
Together with Mahmuda, we ask for your support in making this journey of a lifetime possible as we work to build a new handworker economy that connects craftspeople, brands, and consumers in a circular and human-centric value chain.
